fun fusion music
As any fan of, say, late-period Bob Dylan could tell you, being unable to understand the lyrics to a song need not be an impediment to enjoying it. For additional proof of that maxim, look no further than Soul Science, a collaboration between British and Gambian musicians that demonstrates that a catchy hook is a catchy hook no matter what language it’s sung in or which instrument it’s played on.

In his native England, Justin Adams is widely considered that country’s answer to Ry Cooder; Gambian singer Juldeh Camara is a master of a one-stringed violin called the ritti. Put together, their talents blend as seamlessly as any musical mashup: Several tracks on Soul Science begin with Adams’s traditional blues-rock riffs, but when they’re joined by Camara’s piercing voice and frenzied ritti, the transcendent harmonies that result are powerful enough to send your ears around the globe in four minutes or less.

Chicago Area Belly Dancing
Beginner's Belly Dance in Richton Park -
Tuesday February 5 - March 11, 2008 6:30pm. The location will be at the Rich South High School Dance Studio 4900 W. Sauk Trail. The cost is $40.00 if registered by January 29th. $50.00 thereafter no out-of district fees. Due to a problem with calling the class belly dance, you might need to ask for ab workout class when enrolling. This class is already being advertised in Richton Park and registration has begun, if you want to join this class do it soon before it closes. Registration is at Richton Park Village Hall in the Parks and Rec Department at 4701 W. Sauk Trail.

This class will once again focus on the basics from arm movements to hip movements including shimmies. Choreographed dance will be taught, as well as free style dance. This year will see more emphasis on how to look like a belly dancer for your honey. (Look girls I know what some of your motivation for taking this class is)

Free Belly Dance Workshop - Belly Dancing for Your Valentine
Give your honey a special present this Valentine. Surprise your special one with a belly dance!
This workshop will help anybody look like a belly dancer. You will enjoy an intense 2 hours learning about body positions, how to move across the floor like a belly dancer and basic upper body and hip movements to mesmerize your loved one. Music selection and simple choreography will finish the session. You might not be a belly dancer when you walk in the room but when you walk out your Valentine will swear you are one when you dance.
The workshop will be held on Saturday February 9, 2008 at the Country Club Hills Rec. Ctr. on 179th and Cicero from 2 - 4pm. This class can only accomodate 20 students. If interests is high will add more workshops.
The first day to sign - up will be January 30th at the Rec Center. The hours at the Rec Ctr are 10am - midnight. Sign - up must be in person.

Volunteers Needed - Due to continued requests I am finally going to work on creating a belly dance workout DVD. In order to make sure the workout is effective. I need 5 - 7 volunteers that can commit to working out with me 4 days a week for an hour for 6 - 8 weeks. I will need to take pictures of all participants and their measurements at the beginning of the program and at the end. My timeline to begin this project is February 15th. The criteria to be a part of this exciting venture is you must have completed at least one full session with me. If you are motivated to really work out than join me in creating a new exercise workout.

You are only as beautiful and sexy as you believe.
Connect with the belly dancer within.
Shake your hips!

This is my friend that teaches and I know plenty of folks would love to take this IN Chicago but if she can't get a set number of paying participants in advance, she's not gonna try to make it happen.  Y'all know how it goes.  By the by, want to have her teach or perform for a party? Drop a line and make sure your event is at least 2 weeks in advance and tell her La Shon passed on the info.

shoulder shimmy q
hi everyone!

i hope you're all dancing hard in the new year. :) i had a question about SHOULDER SHIMMIES.

i've never been good at them. i normally say it's because i have huge breasts (L cup raise the roof?) and sometimes arm/shoulder work hurts because of the way my bra straps dig in when i try to do shoulder shimmier or shoulder rotations. but! i'm wondering now if shoulder shimmies are a trick, like hip shimmies... you know? how hip shimmies result in the hip moving but the movement starts in your knees?

so uh... when you shimmy your shoulder, where does the movement start? i'm starting to think i've just been doing it wrong!

x-posted to my journal. :D

dancin' nerdy :P
so i was practicing today (or waving a scarf for my cat -- it's all a matter of perspective) and realized that my dance mantra is often "i am a leaf on the wind -- watch how i soar." in my head there are SPACESHIPS and EXPLOSIONS and it is great.

what's everyone else's dance mantra?
